“Gatsby” by F Scott Fitzgerald, Adapted by Ken Ducum, Directed by Margi Arthur
20th – 31st March 2012
Set in the Spring, Summer and Autumn of 1923, The Great Gatsby was written by Fitzgerald in 1025. The Wall Street crash of 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression could not have been foreshadowed more chillingly than in this novel. This stage presentation dramatically portrays the three tiers of social class existing at that time; the very wealthy “old money”; the corrupt and greedy “new money”‘; and the hardworking but impoverished lower classes.
The numerous characters in this play are shared between the cast of 13, hence the doubling of a number of roles. This doubling of roles was intended by the playwright and the 2 previous productions – both professional – at the Court Theatre in Christchurch in 2009 and Circa in Wellington in 2010, uses just the 8 lead actors to play all the roles.
Cast: Cameron Curd (Jay Gatsby, Mr Gatz); Michelle Rawlinson (Daisy Buchanan); Travis Graham (Tom Buchanan, Wolfsheim, Gatsby’s Butler); Krik Keen (Older Nick, Narrator); Hendrikus (Harrie) de Vaan (Nick Carraway); Katherine Whaley (Jordan Baker, Party Guest); John Bellomo (George Wilson, Dr Civet, Mr McKee, Passing man); Trudie Ashford (Myrtle Wilson, Party Guest); Katherine Wolfe (Yellow Girl 1, Mrs Ripley-Snell, Mrs Michaelis); Tracee Pigott (Yellow Girl 2, Maid, Mrs McKee, Miss Flink); Tanaka Utete (Bandleader, Buchanon’s Butler, Dog Seller, Golf Caddy); Niall Corbett (Owl-Eyed Man, Pianist); Davina Moffat (Woman singer)
